Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner edit

YSSYguy, you're doing a great job on the Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner article. I can fill in a bit from my own experiences with the Metroliner that has been the staple of the Perimeter Aviation company down the street from me (I work in the airport as the executive director of the aviation industry association in our part of the world) as well as the various Bearskin Airline Metros. I flew on one of Bearskin Metros this summer. Pilot bounced the landing, sometimes hard to be smooth in landing with those stalky legs! We've had a spate of runway excursions recently with the Perimeter aircraft mainly due to shaky landings – those stilts really snap nicely! The Perimeter birds are interesting hybrids with a company designed four-bladed prop that cuts down the howl and keeps the tips out of the gravel a bit. Yesterday, an old Merlin was warming up by my terminal and the scream from the old engine-prop reminded me why I didn't like that variant. I think the Perimeter folks still fly that Merlin on occasion but it may have just been doing an engine test. When a lot of engines are backlogged, they resort to the Perimeter "Airbus", a converted school bus with the engine exposed on a framework where the passenger compartment used to reside. It's a hoot to see the "bus" going up and down the taxiways with a Metro engine howling away (I think they use a cut-down prop for the testing). Nice talking to you, I look forward to seeing more of your submissions. I'll add some more Metro photos to spruce up the article. Sorry I didn't get back to you quicker. Thats good that you've confirmed 1981. Since all I have that says 1980 is the Janes book , I'll assume its got mistakes in it. As for the reference issue, the current trend for the best articles in Wikipedia is to have inline references (that whole <ref></ref> thing) everywhere, take B-52 for example. Now this is just off the top of my head (and you know how much that can hurt) but the Raytheon/Beechcraft (Beech) C-90B King Air (replacing earlier C-90As) used in training at Southport Aerospace (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) by the No. 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School (3 CFFTS) is probably the only use of the King Air in the Canadian military. Anyway, I came across an interesting situation. Someone did an edit a day or two ago, adding info to the section about upgrades. The person did a poor job with the referencing and did some damage, so I reverted it. I did a little mouse clicking; this is the interesting bit - the person thoughtfully registered a user name, which is identical to the name of the manager of the company that the info was about. In other words, it looks like someone is touting for business using Wikipedia. Have you seen this before, and is there any need to do anything else? Hi guy! Thanks for your note. This is a new but not isolated instance of "pretexting" and I have read a bit about the legality if not the questionable nature of "sowing" information. Pretexting is the act of pretending to be someone who you are not by telling an untruth, or creating deception. Although the term is mainly used in customer contact by telephone where the company/organization uses deceptive means to elicit information and/or commitment from others, it can also apply here.

The great philospher Stephen Colbert has a "take" on this. (Do you get his show, BTW, it's a riot as he viciously eviserates the Conservative talk show blowhards, whoops, forgot you have Howard there...) He says this: "In a July 2006 episode of the satirical TV comedy, The Colbert Report, Colbert announced the neologism wikiality, a portmanteau of the words Wiki and reality, for his segment "The Wørd." Colbert defined wikiality as "truth by consensus" (rather than fact), modeled after the approval-by-consensus format of Wikipedia. He ironically praised Wikipedia for following his philosophy of truthiness, in which intuition and consensus is a better reflection of reality than fact:

You see, any user can change any entry, and if enough other users agree with them, it becomes true. ... If only the entire body of human knowledge worked this way. And it can, thanks to tonight's word: Wikiality. Now, folks, I'm no fan of reality, and I'm no fan of encyclopedias. I've said it before. Who is Britannica to tell me that George Washington had slaves? If I want to say he didn't, that's my right. And now, thanks to Wikipedia, it's also a fact. We should apply these principles to all information. All we need to do is convince a majority of people that some factoid is true... What we're doing is bringing democracy to knowledge.

According to Colbert, together "we can all create a reality that we all can agree on; the reality that we just agreed on." During the segment, he joked "I love Wikipedia... any site that's got a longer entry on truthiness than on Lutherans has its priorities straight." Colbert also used the segment to satirize the more general issue of whether the repetition of statements in the media leads people to believe they are true. The piece was introduced with the tagline, "The Revolution Will Not Be Verified," referencing the lack of objective verification seen in some articles.

Colbert suggested that viewers change the elephant page to state that the number of African elephants has tripled in the last six months. The suggestion resulted in numerous incorrect changes to Wikipedia articles related to elephants and Africa. Wikipedia administrators subsequently restricted edits to the pages by anonymous and newly created users.

Colbert went on to type on a laptop facing away from the camera, claiming to be making the edits to the pages himself. In addition, initial edits to Wikipedia corresponding to these claimed "facts" were made by a user named Stephencolbert. Thus, many believe Colbert himself vandalized several Wikipedia pages at the time he was encouraging other users to do the same. The account, whether it was Stephen Colbert himself or someone posing as him, has been blocked from Wikipedia indefinitely. The account was blocked for violating Wikipedia's username policies, which state that using the names of celebrities as login names is inappropriate. The account will be reopened if and when Colbert or Comedy Central confirm its identity."

Now using the Colbert treatise, this company representative has made an effort to create a favourable impression for his company. Was he right to do it? Don't know. Was he accurate? Maybe. Was it legal? Probably. Was it ethical? Nope. It now enters the Colbert vocabulary of "truthiness" or sort of the truth, depending on who says it. FWIW, keep an eye on the article, if it becomes blatant "advertising" then a tag of {advert} or {COI} (conflict of interest) can end any more shenanigans. Hi YSSYguy - yes, we're replacing all sequences with navboxes as part of a more general re-arrangement of aircraft page content to avoid WP:AIR having to fight and re-fight the same old battles over "See also" vs "Related content" and the position of this material on pages. As things stand right now, all "Sequence" data is staying put in articles until a suitable navbox is in place, but has been turned off at the template-level so it's not displaying. The hard work that you (and many others) have done in ensuring that these sequences have been entered correctly in articles is making the job of navbox creation very easy indeed - maybe you would like to chip in? Let me know if you'd like to help and if you need a hand in getting started. Cheers! :) --Rlandmann (talk) 00:17, 11 January 2008 (UTC)Reply There are two bits of clean-up needed straight away: Like I said, we need new navboxes to replace the various navigation sequences out there. There's a list here of footers already known to be in existence (there's bound to be a few others): so you can just pick any one of the many notably absent manufacturers and use an existing template as a model, create a new navbox to insert into the relevant articles. If you're not comfortable with that, or you feel like something a little more mechanical, there's a glitch that's been created when translating certain articles to the new format. This has occurred where editors have inserted navboxes into the {{aircontent}} template itself, mostly manufacturer sequences. This really messes up the bottom of the article (see here for a fine example). Another "interesting" variation on this is where certain editors have not only inserted navboxes, but attempted to tinker with the output of the template by (for example) commenting out the "See also" parameter (see here). In both cases, the {{aviation lists}} navbox and any other navboxes need to be placed together at the bottom of the article, immediately before the Categories. I'm getting a list soon of all articles known to be affected, but in the meantime, it's a simple case of following the links from the list of manufacturer navboxes and seeing which ones are affected. Hi again! Just caught your edit in the List of aircraft and thought I'd just point out that replacing working redirects is considered counterproductive (and actually against policy). There are two reasons for this:

  1. the redirects show us the prevalence of a particular link across the project. In this specific case, it shows (well, used to show!) how many and which articles link directly to (for example) "Convair 540". This fact would be an important consideration in any future decision about whether the 540 should be split off from the 240 into a separate article.
  2. and more importantly, if someone were to go ahead and create a "Convair 540" article out of the present redirect, the relevant links throughout Wikipedia would already be pointing to the new article. By replacing the links with piped links to another article, it means that anyone creating a "Convair 540" article would then need to trawl through all the links to the 240 and decide which ones should actually point to the 540 instead.

In answer to some of your questions, whatever sets me or others off on an article? In this case, just finding an old magazine lying around led me to look at a very detailed account of the Beech Model 34 "Twin-Quad" of all things. I believe you were correct to delete the two aircraft said to be operated by other airlines. Although [1] claims that Hellas Jet A320 SX-BVD and [2] claims that Aurela 737-300 LY-SKA are operated for Cyprus Airways, I could not cross-check this info with another page like [3], for example. Hellas Jet and Aurela webpages provide no info. Also, this is a slow season and it's unlikely that the airline wet leases aircraft to increase its capacity. Unless their are inconsistent numbers in the Qantas fleet table (on the article) then I strongly believe the figure I adjusted are accurate, if you would like, can you please add up the total number of aircraft on the table.

Convair 580 images edit

Hi YSSYguy a bot will probably inform you in time, but I didn't want an impersonal bot be the first to tell you that two of your images File:N141FL.JPG and File:VHPDL.JPG have been copied to Wikimedia Commons and that they can be found at Commons:Category:Convair 580. The images retain the licenses you uploaded them under however a minor change has been made to the names so as to be less cryptic. Images on Commons can be used in exactly the same way as images loaded directly to en:wikipedia with the important addition that the images can now be used by any sister wiki. To allow this the images have to be free to use which is what you have granted with the addition of the GDFL licence. If you are happy to continue making your images free under the GDFL licence its worth considering using Commons for your future uploads, with SUL you've probably already have an account with Commons, and the upload and editing process there is pretty much the same as it is here. The accident meets the notable criteria for Wikipedia. 1) Fatal Accident 2) Complete hull loss 3) Accident higlighted company procedures for night flying. The accident was also referenced with the NTSB. I've noticed that the Pel-Air EMB-120 Brasilia freighter is parked at Wagga Wagga Airport (Poor image as these are parked at some distance in which my DSLR and Digital Camera can't reach) along with other Pel-Air and Australian Air Express metro's. And no doubt Roma isn't in western Qld as it is further east than Cairns, Wisconsin is not in the Midwestern United States but the Mideastern and Balmain is in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Geography is more than mere geometry and most people understand that terms such as "west" etc. when used in geography have a meaning enhanced by usage, custom and history. Still, I can't be be bothered arguing further. If you want to centre NSW geography on Nyngan, be my guest, just be aware it simply makes you look silly. I am sure your edit of the UAL 232 article [[5]] was made in good faith, so please don't take this correction as being personal. I am aware that accident was referred to in the popular press as an "incident," but Wiki Aviation articles use the ICAO definitions, not those of the popular press. The NTSB labeled it as an "Accident" on their title page of that report, as well as throughout the report. You can find the definitions in ICAO Annex 13, [6].

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear about the increase of crime in the SYD streets. Can't help but suspect that has a lot to do with your govt taking away your gun rights. Our crime rates have been dropping for some time now, which I tend to connect to the spread of our right to carry concealed weapons, to the majority of the States in our Union. I never go to town without at least one gun on me.
I have several hundred aviation books in my library. A lot of them came from bookshops in SYD and AKL. It was always kinda fun, when I would come back thru US Customs, and they asked the usual "do you have anything to declare?" and I would answer, "yes, books." That always got their curiosity up, so they insisted on looking thru my bags. Fun to watch their eyes, when they found my bags loaded with 10 to 30 books. I loved the Power House and Maritime Museums, and the Sydney Aquarium. Of course, always enjoyed the "views" at Bondi Beach too... Got lotsa photos of Sydney in my collections.   • This section (Premium Economy) outlines the Pacific Blue flights operated by DJ Australian crews. I realised Port Vila isn't in this list, but Australia-Denpasar, Port Moresby and Honiara are operated by VB crews using Australian registed a/c.
Further to add, per Wikiproject Guidelines, wholly owned subsidiaries which use their own aircraft but uses their parent's code (or another airline); for example, QantasLink using the QF code or Pacific Blue using the DJ flight code, in those cases they are usually listed under the parent company's name, per Airport Wikiproject's guidelines. Separate airlines which are owned by others, but are independant and use their own codes (eg Jetstar or V Australia) are listed on their own.
So pretty much Port Vila (and all other Pacific Blue destinations) are still listed under their parent airline per guidelines. Sb617 (contribs) 09:45, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
