Manure Ruling Stinks for Pork Giant

Pork giant Smithfield Foods lost a key federal court battle on Friday against a North Carolina couple living near one of the company’s contractor hog farms, according to The Wall Street Journal. A jury awarded the couple $25 million over the nuisance of living near open pools of manure. The suit was the second in a series of 500 similar complaints against the Chinese-owned company. In an earlier case, the company lost a $50 million lawsuit brought forward by 10 families. The amount was reduced to $3.25 million to comply with state caps on damages, reports the Journal. A company executive has said the lawsuits pose a threat to Smithfield's business in the state.
