Abhijit (nakshatra)

Summary

Abhijita (Hindi: अभिजित) is the 22nd lunar mansion out of 28 in the Indian system of nakshatra. Abhijita is the Sanskrit name for Vega, the brightest star in the northern constellation of Lyra. Abhijita means "the victorious One" in Sanskrit.

History edit

In the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu as Krishna tells Uddhava, that among the Nakshatras, he is Abhijita, which shows the auspiciousness of this Nakshatra.[1]

Its longitude starts from 06° 40' to 10° 53' 20 in the sidereal constellation Capricorn i.e. from the last quarter of nakshatra Uttara Ashadha to first 1/15 th part of Shravana.[2] Hence, Abhijita Nakshatra is not a regular nakshatra with four padas and it is a intercalary Nakshatra most of the time. It is not mentioned as frequently as the other asterisms in Hindu mythology. Chandra is has 27 wives who are Nakshatras with whom he stays for one day in a sidereal lunar month. Each of the 27 asterisms is feminine and are sisters: only Abhijita is masculine and is their brother. Abhijita Nakshatra is an auspicious Nakshatra in the Hindu Calendar.
