History edit

The first such event was held in 1970 in the dry bed of the Todd River between two Lions Club members, in an ephemeral river in the southern Northern Territory. It soon became a part of the Alice Springs Centenary Year Celebrations. The Alice Springs Lions Club recognised the event's popularity and started an annual celebration in Traeger Park. Due to security reasons, it was soon moved to Arunga Park Speedway in Stuart, N.T.

It was 1979 when the race was transferred to a track specially built for camel racing at Blatherskite Park.[2]
