Championship car or "Champ cars" refers originally to the AAA and USAC cars run under the FIA formula for Indianapolis Race cars that ran a series of races counting toward the U.S. speedway driver title. Most were run on 1 mile dirt fairground speedways using upright dirt cars or Champ cars, a term later borrowed by those using rear engine Indy cars in the '90's.
