Controversy edit

On 17 September 2022, at least 6 girls residing in Chandigarh University hostel complained to the hostel warden about a girl who was secretly recording their videos.[27] Later that day, a video erupted on the social media, where the warden of the hostel said in Chandigarh University was reprimanding the accused girl for recording bathing videos of her hostel-mates.[28][29] As this went viral, demands for legal action into the matter were being made.[30] On 18 September 2022, Punjab Police arrested the female student at Chandigarh University for allegedly recording objectionable videos of hostel inmates and sending them to her boyfriend in Shimla who leaked it on the internet.[31] The action was taken after hostel inmates claimed their videos have gone viral on the internet.

The university promptly issued a statement saying that there was only one 'leaked' clip and that it was a personal video that the accused sent to her boyfriend in Shimla. However, students at the university protested alleging that the university was covering-up the facts and suppressing the case.[32][33]

A massive protest erupted on the university campus over the leaked clips. The protesting students alleged that the girl used her mobile to make videos of students taking a bath.[34] Following massive protests, the university administration declared holidays till 24 September 2022.[35]

The police denied any incident of death, injury or attempt to suicide in the aftermath of the video leak. “It's a matter of a video being shot by a girl student & circulated. FIR has been registered in the matter and the accused student has been arrested. No death reported related to this incident. As per medical records, no attempt (to commit suicide)was reported”, Mohali SSP Vivek Soni said.[36]
