Johannesburg is a city that began as a 19th century gold mining settlement. A township in the city called Soweto was once home to Nelson Mandela (7/18/1918-12/5/2013), who was a former South African statesman. It was also home to Desmond Tutu (Born October 7, 1931). Mandela's former residence is now a museum. Other museums located in Soweto recount the struggle to end segregation. These museums include the somber Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, a former prison complex.
