John G. McHenry was born in Benton Township, Pennsylvania on April 26, 1868.^[1] He attended the public schools and Orangeville Academy.^[1] He became a successful farmer, banker and distiller.^[2][3] He was the organizer of the Grange national banks throughout Pennsylvania.^[1] From 1897 to 1898 he served as chairman of the Columbia County Democratic Committee.^[3]

McHenry was elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth, Sixty-first, and Sixty-second Congresses.^[3] He had been in failing health throughout 1912, and had not been a candidate for reelection.^[3] He was serving his final term when he died in Benton, Pennsylvania on December 27, 1912.^[3] Interment in Benton Cemetery.^[4]
