Summary

The Japanese believed that storms, most likely typhoons, that had destroyed Mongolian fleets attempting invasions in 1274 and 1281 been sent from the gods to protect them from their enemies and called them Kamikaze (‘divine wind’).

The term kamikaze was later used later to exalt military aviators of the Empire of Japan who made suicide attacks, primarily against Allied naval vessels, during World War II.
