Naikhongchhari (Bengali: নাইক্ষ্যংছড়ি) is an upazila of Bandarban District in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh.^[1]

Geography edit

Naikhongchhari is located at 21°25′00″N 92°11′00″E / 21.4167°N 92.1833°E / 21.4167; 92.1833. It has 12,218 households and a total area of 463.60 km².^[2] Naikhongchhari is bordered by Lama upazila to the north, Alikadam upazila to the east, Rakhine State of Myanmar to the south, and Cox's Bazar district to the west.

As of the 2011 Bangladeshi census, Naikhongchhari upazila had 12,218 households and a population of 61,788. 19,304 (31.24%) were under 10 years of age. Naikhongchhari had an average literacy rate of 31.29%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 971 females per 1000 males. 18,257 (29.55%) of the population lived in urban areas.^[2] The ethnic population was 11,582 (18.74%), of which Marma were 4,351, Mru 1,822 and Tripura 305.^[3]

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Naikhongchhari has a population of 38,350. Males constitute 53.26% of the population, and females 46.74%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 18754. Naikhongchhari has an average literacy rate of 20.2% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.^[4]

Naikhongchhari Upazila is divided into four union parishads: Baishari, Dochhari, Ghandung, and Naikhongchhari. The union parishads are subdivided into 17 mauzas and 237 villages.^[5]
