New York Meteorological Observatory

Summary

The New York Meteorological Observatory was founded by meteorologist Daniel Draper (1841-1931)[1] and some friends was and was set up at the Armory on Fifth Avenue and 64th street[2] in 1868. It began collecting data the following year, and this data has been considered official ever since. After Draper's retirement as its first director in 1911, National Weather Bureau took over the Observatory, and moved to Belvedere Castle in Central park eight years later.

In the early 1960s, the Weather Bureau replaced the equipment with automated instruments and moved the offices elsewhere. Since then most of the castle was repurposed, although the automated observatory still functions to this day.
