Habinek received his AB in classics from Princeton University in 1975,^[1] and later completed his PhD in classical philology from Harvard University in 1981.^[1]

He was a professor of classics at University of Southern California^[1] from 1992 – 2019, and received two fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Associates' Award for Excellence in Teaching.^[1] He died on January 19, 2019, at the age of 65.^[2]
