Title drop

Summary

A title drop, also known as a titular line,[1][2] is a line of dialogue in a film, television series, book or other media containing its title.[3][4][5] It often indicates the scene has a special significance or can be a "penny drop" moment explaining the title.

Most of the time, the title drop can happen at the finale, for example in The Breakfast Club where the final line is "Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club".,[6] or Iron Man where the final line is "I am Iron Man."[7]

For media that have a titular character such as Batman, title drops are less impactful as the character's name is often mentioned in dialogue.

Title drops are also sometimes made via written words rather than being spoken directly, either in the world's natural environment or via a film transition. A title sequence announcing a film or television show's name (e.g. the Star Wars opening crawl) is not considered a title drop, but a transition is. A notable example of the latter is the film 28 Days Later, where a title drop via a screen transition occurs after two important scenes the towards the beginning and end of the film.

Examples edit

  • 28 Days Later - A written title drop occurs two times, once after the opening scene where the virus is unleashed, and once towards the end of the film. In both cases this serves as a timeskip.
  • Back To The Future Part III - “Hey, Doc! Where you goin' now? Back to the future?”
  • Chinatown - “Forget it Jake. It’s Chinatown.”
  • The Dark Knight - "A Dark Knight"
  • Independence Day - "We will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. We’re going to live on. We’re going to survive. Today we celebrate our Independence Day!"
  • Kingdom Of Heaven - “A new world. A better world than has ever been seen. A kingdom of conscience. A kingdom of heaven.”
  • The Walking Dead - "We are the Walking Dead."
  • Jurassic Park - "Welcome, to Jurassic Park."
