Yelkhovsky District (Russian: Елховский райо́н) is an administrative[1] and municipal[5] district (raion), one of the twenty-seven in Samara Oblast, Russia. It is located in the north of the oblast. The area of the district is 1,201 square kilometers (464 sq mi).[citation needed] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Yelkhovka.[2] Population: 10,046 (2010 Census);[3] 10,187 (2002 Census).[8] The population of Yelkhovka accounts for 32.5% of the district's total population.[3]

The district was first established on May 14, 1928 within Middle Volga Oblast.[citation needed] It went through a number of changes, transformations, and abolitions, and was re-established in its current form on January 13, 1992.[citation needed]
