Pet Guinea Pigs and UVB Lighting

Ultraviolet B, or UVB, is not an essential requirement for guinea pigs. UVB is one type of radiation emitted by the sun (the other is UVA). Still, those with regular exposure to it are more active and have a better appetite and disposition. Exposure to UVB light assists guinea pigs that are experiencing illness, depression due to the death of a fellow guinea pig, or stress. A UVB bulb installed in your pet's enclosure or a space that the guinea pig frequents should be suspended 12 to 18 inches above the ground to keep your pet from being sunburned. A bulb that is too close may harm a guinea pig's eyes. You may turn the bulb on for a maximum of 12 hours. Even if the bulb is still operating, you should replace it every six months as the UVB rays might deplete within this time frame. Regular checkups at your vet clinic Fort Collins, CO will benefit your guinea pig's overall health and wellness.
