Ringworm in Dogs

Ringworm, despite its name, isn’t a worm at all. It’s a fungal infection that can affect your dog. This is the same ringworm that humans get!

Ringworm gets its name from the red ring shape that appears on humans with the infection. On your dog, you won’t see a ring. Symptoms include scaly or crusty areas of skin, hair loss, and bald patches. Your dog’s hair might fall out easily when touched. Luckily, this fungal infection isn’t difficult to treat. Your vet can prescribe medicated shampoos, oral medications, and topical lotions that should kill off the fungus and help your dog get back to normal. You’ll probably need to quarantine your dog from other pets in the house to prevent ringworm from spreading; it’s highly contagious. Don’t forget to wear gloves when bathing Fido!
