9 Essentials to Remember to Pack in Your Hospital Bag Before Birth

One of the most important parts of preparing for birth is getting a hospital bag ready. You will want to prepare it well in advance, around month eight of the pregnancy, as babies can come much earlier than their due date. From swaddling muslins to your own pillows, here are the essentials you’ll need.

A Copy of Your Birth Plan and Other Documents

If you have a birth plan, keep an extra copy in your bag. You will also want IDs and your health insurance card. If you have them, backup medical records and any hospital paperwork can also be tucked away.

Glasses or Contact Lenses

Don’t forget your glasses or extra contact lenses. It’s far too easy to forget these when you are rushing to the hospital. Bring spare glasses even if you wear contacts, as you may be asked to take them out if surgery is needed.

Spare Clothes

Bring a few changes of clothes in case you have to stay in the hospital a few days, and make sure they are comfortable. A good start is loose pants and a tank top for one outfit, and you might want a comfy robe. You will also need comfortable, breathable cotton underwear after giving birth. If your partner is with you, don’t forget to pack extra clothes for them, as well.

Muslin Blankets for Your New Little One

You will want to have at least one extra muslin blanket. The hospital will probably have blankets, but they are scratchy and not very pretty, frankly. You will also want one of your own for the car ride home as the hospital will likely keep theirs. You can even coordinate it with your baby’s going-home outfit.

A Going-Home Outfit for Pictures

Many parents want a picture of themselves and their baby as they leave the hospital. That means you will want to pack a going-home outfit for your new baby in the bag. Bring a few different sizes, just in case. The hospital should provide a hat for your baby, but you might also want socks if it is cold out. Don’t forget a cute, comfortable outfit for yourself as well!

Toiletries for Overnight Stays

Chances are you will spend at least one night in the hospital. You will want your toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm, hairbrush, regular or dry shampoo, hair ties, and face wipes.

Food and Drinks for Between Meals

Ordering hospital food is often a slow process. Your food is usually included in the overall price of your stay, but if you have a partner with you, they may be out of luck. Keep some extra snacks in your hospital bag for between meals, and remember to order extra for your partner.

Nursing Essentials for Feeding and Comfort

Nursing bras, pads, and creams are essential if you’re nursing. If not, the pads can provide leak protection. Bring at least two bottles and formula if you are bottle feeding. Consider packing them anyway, in case you have unexpected trouble breastfeeding.

Pillows and Blankets for You and Your Partner’s Comfort

You can increase your comfort with your own pillows, which will be better than hospital pillows. Plus, your partner will want a pillow and muslin blanket if they are sleeping on a chair or couch.
