A Long Way Gone

The most important aim of art is making people feel something. In fact, art does not need to be beautiful. Undoubtedly, a really good piece of art is supposed to bring some feelings and emotions to people. Only in this way it can be memorized for long years. Of course, books are art as well, even autobiographical books. The piece of literature that grabbed my attention and had a great effect on me is A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, which was written by Ishmael Beah.

I was born and raised in Nepal. Nepal also has a lot of political instability just like Sierra Leone in the book, though it is not as dangerous. My childhood was also under a constant fear and agony. I was born in a humble family in Nepal. Although my parents never went to college, they realized the importance of education and always provided me with the best possible one. Later, my family moved from the village to the city, where I got an opportunity to attend a private middle school and learned English. Based on my academic achievements, I earned a scholarship to attend one of the best high schools in Nepal. While I was there, I started enjoying Math and Science. After a high school, I came to the United States and joined Fullerton College. At Fullerton College, my chemistry professors helped me to discover my passion for chemical engineering. Ishmael’s book inspired me to fight against injustice and crimes. I am trying to make people aware encouraging friends and family to educate Nepalese citizens. It also provides a unique perspective of the dark sides of civil wars. I have learnt not to judge people instantly because their upbringing may have been completely different.

In A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier Ishmael Beah reveals seven themes, and each of them taught me something very important. From the theme “survival”, I learnt that a person can overcome almost everything. All he or she needs in a time of need is his or her own belief that it is possible for he or she to stay alive. Importantly, it is easier to survive when a person calms down his or her emotions and feelings. The other topic of the book is memory, and Beah shows how it helped to overcome everything that happened to him. I realize that good memories of happy times really make everything easier. The theme, which can be called “loss of innocence”, teaches that people may become stronger and ruder, not because they are bad, but because they had to live in horrible conditions. The author also reveals the theme of hope, which showed me that there is always enough space for it. Now I realize that no matter what happens, a person must hope and believe. These two feelings will always help to stay alive and see the light future.

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is a book with a deep sense, which makes readers think about life and many other serious issues. Moreover, it helps to understand and believe that a human can bear everything if he or she really wants it and believes in his or her personal strength. It is also important to know why one needs to overcome everything that he or she faces. Now I know that hope and belief are the keys to survival. This amazing and touching book of the story of Ishmael Beah’s life impressed and inspired me very much. To sum up, I can say that it is really worth reading.
