CBD Oil for Pets: What to Look for

CBD seems to be the common thread of discussion among pet lovers. Many are either considering buying CBD oil for pets or are advocating about its many benefits. But the current hype around CBD leads to unscrupulous marketers making inaccurate and misleading claims about their products. No wonder there have been several reports about CBD products containing more or less CBD than the label claims. Some products have even been found to have no traces of CBD at all!

If you are considering buying CBD oil for your dog or cat, here are a few tips to consider:

1. Don’t be Misled by Apparent Discounts

There’s a huge disparity in the cost of CBD products on the market. Some are very affordable, while some sell for exorbitant costs! This disparity is largely due to the quality and quantity of CBD used in the product. High-quality hemp is grown under clean and hygienic conditions. This is necessary because cannabis absorbs contaminants and is likely to carry these nasty elements into the products. Low-quality CBD is likely to carry aflatoxins, pesticides, and other fungal or bacterial contaminants. Even if the CBD is of good quality, inexpensive artificial flavorings used in CBD dog treats could also be toxic to pets.

Extracting and purifying CBD oil is a complex and labor-intensive process. You need specialized equipment for this process. Genuine CBD products come with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) which certifies the purity and potency of the product. Cheap CBD products may or may not contain CBD, or worse, they may have more than 0.3% THC. THC is toxic to animals, causing a wide range of negative side effects.

2. Purchase from Reputable Sellers

A majority of CBD sellers prefer to sell their products online. Because of this, there are plenty of sellers making unsubstantiated claims about the problems that CBD can cure. Some claim their products can cure cancer, and others claim it’s a miracle cure for osteoarthritis in dogs and cats. Read reviews about the supplier before buying, and do your research about the company. Were they sued in the past for making unsubstantiated claims? Were they penalized by the FDA? Does the batch number mentioned on the COA match with the number on the product sample? Learning more about the company can help to ensure you are getting a quality product.

3. Do Not Give Your Pets CBD Products Intended for Humans

As earlier said, not all CBD products are labeled accurately. They may vary in terms of THC or CBD content. THC is toxic for pets and what causes a high in people. This means that products intended for people are not always safe on pets. Many vets have reported instances of having to treat pets for marijuana poisoning because of this discrepancy. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, or restlessness.

Many claim CBD products can be beneficial for pets. As more research on CBD is done, we will learn more about the effects it has on animals. If you decide to try CBD products on your pet, keep the above tips in mind before making your purchase. Also, talk to your vet before starting any new care routine for your furry friend.
