How to Train Smarter and Harder

It’s easy to get caught in a “no pain, no gain” mentality. While these pain-loving mantras that celebrate difficulty can help you get through a challenging set, sometimes it’s easy to get too caught up in difficulty. Working smarter can help you work harder and reach your goals quicker without wasting on exercises that don’t actually work for you. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you start training smarter.

Keep Your Routine Consistent

Consistency is key to achieving results. Although you might physically go to the gym the same days every week, being there isn’t enough. You need to follow a set routine that allows you to measure and track progress. Trying a new fitness routine can be an exciting challenge, almost like buying new
workout clothes for women or men, but if you’re jumping from routine to routine or just taking an impromptu approach to fitness, you could end up spinning your wheels. Instead, be patient with your fitness regimen and give it a few weeks, if not months, before trying something new. On the other hand, it’s important to know when something isn’t working for you. A sport or exercise that you just don’t enjoy or that doesn’t work for you could hold you back. Once you’ve given it some time, cut it if you need to.

Focus on Intensity, Not Just Numbers

It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers. From how many reps you complete to how many sets are in your workout or the numbers on the weight plates themselves, training can often feel like mathematics. While you want to pay attention to the numbers to help you track your progress, don’t let them rob your workout of its intensity. Instead, focus on how much energy you’re expending in a set, how much time under tension your muscles endure or try
implementing drop sets to pump up the volume.

Work Out Around Your Schedule and How You Feel

It can be easy to make excuses when your workout routine isn’t flexible. While it’s valiant to work out at 4 a.m. every morning, if you aren’t a natural morning person, you’ll have a hard time staying consistent. It’s good to be aspirational, but you have to be realistic too and keep your schedule flexible to best fit your daily life and your changing moods and energy levels. By keeping your
gym shoes at the ready, you can find all sorts of time throughout the day to sneak in a good workout. So, if skipping the gym has been a problem, try rethinking the concept of a gym schedule.

Emphasize Recovery

Gains are about more than reps and workouts. Real improvements happen outside of the gym, from the foods you eat, the supplements you take and
how your body recovers. While foam rolling, stretching and light exercise might not seem exciting, focusing on recovery can help you train smarter, reduce injury risk and help your body feel fresh in time for the next workout. Don’t let recovery take a backseat and prioritize it in your overall wellness routine.
