What counts as RICS CPD?

RICS CPD is a form of commitment which the RoyalInstitution of Chartered Surveyors require from their members and non-member candidates applying to become chartered. The RICS professional body promoting the qualifications for management., development and valuation in the land, property and building sector maintains it's standards by implementing the importance of Continuous Professional Development. There are two different types of CPD: formal CPD and informal CPD.

Formal CPD is any learning/ training structures which will give a resulted outcome in the professional field. Formal CPD includes:

·         Professional Courses

·         Structured Seminars

·         In-house training on technical subjects provided by the firm or employer

·         Formal Teaching

·         Self-managed learnings 

·         Computer-based training (e.g., MCQ questions)

·         Participating in online events and interactive sessions related to the professional field

·         Undertaking the RICS Global Professional and Ethical Standards online courses

·         Taking academic courses which are related to your profession.

Informal CPD is when a candidate manages to self-study and acquire knowledge through developing the skills related to the profession. Informal CPD includes:

·         Informal Learning

·         Informal Teaching

·         Self-study by reading online papers, articles and writing associated with the professional field, listening to podcasts

·         Mentoring a trainee in the firm or student who is progressing in the same profession

What is the importance of CPD?

RICS CPD helps to develop the skills in an individual who is exploring the industry to become a professional. CPD is recorded as one of the rules in the RICS Rules of Conduct for Members. Each candidate progressing to become an MRICS and applying to the RICS APC final assessment process should ensure to record the CPD hours. A member is required to complete 20 hours of CPD in which 10 hours are formal hours so that they can apply to become an MRICS. Individuals who seek assistance from online courses and RICS APC Coaching Services can take online CPD Courses such as Health, Safety and CDM Regulations, Risk Management, TenderManagement, Managing Projects with JCT Contracts and more. These courses are available through the online course provider – the College of Contract Management. The college is an approved service provider of the RICS providing professional assistance in becoming an MRICS. Each candidate taking a formal CPD should record the hours and submit with the documents required to attend the RICS final interview. Candidates can record CPD hours by either keeping a log or recording the activities using the RICS CPD mobile app or portal.
