Softball for Softies

‘Tis the season to play softball. The time of year –actually it’s almost year-round—when adults who are overweight or out of shape—or both—get out and prove they still have what it takes to be a teenager!SB 1.jpg

I know, I’m one of them. There are all kinds of leagues from men’s- or women’s-only teams who play well and are in “A” team leagues, down to coed “D” league play which is most affectionately called “Beer League”. Beer league play is not so much about the game or even winning it, but more about getting out of the office, or off the couch, and having fun with your friends; to participate in a wholesome, not-so-competitive program that is primarily concerned with fair play and sportsmanship.

To describe the game, it is slow-pitch where the pitcher tosses the ball underhand with an arc not to exceed 14 feet at its apex. 10 players are allowed on the field in all the normal baseball positions with an additional “Rover” position in the outfield. 5 Men and 5 women play on the field and bat in alternating gender order. Two men or two women batting back-to-back is not allowed.

Weekend warriors suit up! Or as in my case Tuesday night warriors.
