About the Big Island Knowpia

Hawaii Island, All the islands are the Hawaiian Islands, but the Big Island is Hawaii.

The Hawaiian Islands form an archipelago that extends over a vast area of the North Pacific Ocean. The archipelago is made up of 132 islands, atolls, reefs, shallow banks, shoals, and seamounts stretching over 1,500 miles from the island of Hawaii in the southeast to Kure Atoll in the northwest.

This is the beginning of a series of stories about our home, the Big Island of Hawaii. It is from the beginnings to the present. It is about our land, we farm, which is so sacred to us, it provides all one can need to sustain the body and soul. This is Hawaii's Plymoth Rock.....they landed in front of our farm 2000 years ago.

This story has been in the making for 42 million years. A small fraction of time in our water planet, Earth, that is 4.5 billion years young.

When the crack opened back in the day, in the middle of the great Pacific Ocean, islands were formed and time took them back to the sea. So isolated were these islands, millions of years past waiting for any life form to take hold.

The uniqueness of these islands created a life system found no place else. Until people showed up, 9 out of 10 living things on our islands were found only here. Even today, Hawaii represents the most endemic list of plant and animal life found nowhere else.

We are the caretakers.

Today, the original mountains of lava have since vanished below the waves, only what remains, still growing, are a mere 5 million years old. Our island, Hawaii, is so young, considered the new kid on the block, for only 900,000 years.

Depending on what you read, we, have been on this planet for 40,000 years, up to 2.5 million years evolving. Now just about the time Jesus was spreading the word and Mohamed was coming out of the desert (2000 years), a small group of Polynesians sailed North from the South pacific islands, in search of a new home. Hawaii Island is what they found.
