Are gaming laptops good for writing?

I think it depends on your situation. If you don’t move around too much and portability isn’t your greatest priority then gaming laptop will be good for you. Why?

Nowadays, good gaming laptops usually come with good keyboard (if not how are they going to play?) and a good screen. That’s probably the most important things for writing. The trackpad may not be good in some cases, but you can get a good mouse, and using a mouse is better than trackpad. If you sit in one place most of the time, you will just plug in your computer and don’t worry about battery life. Also, you have to sit and put your laptop on a desk when write right?

That being said, there are decent portable gaming laptops. You can find 15″ gaming laptops at around 2kg or even lighter. They are not ultra portable but they’re still very portable. Many gaming laptops now have decent battery life. This is due to Nvidia Optimus which allows the laptop to not use the dedicated GPU when doing light task → better battery life.

For purely writing, gaming laptops are probably overkill in terms of performance. In terms of price, there are high-end Ultrabook's out there with very expensive price tag so it depends on how much you want to spend. Also, if anyone suggest a Dell XPS15, you should remind them that the XPS15 is 2kg which is the about the same weight as the Razer Blade 15.
