Amazon Slammed for Police Tech Sales

Amazon is providing facial recognition technology to police in Oregon and Florida as a trial run for a wider rollout, according to documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, reports The Washington Post. Civil rights groups requested in an open letter Tuesday that the tech giant stop selling the software, known as Rekognition, which they say could violate privacy and could be harmful to communities of color. “Amazon should not be in the business of providing surveillance systems like Rekognition to the government,” the letter reads. Amazon did not address the letter but said that it requires that its customers use the technology responsibly and lawfully.
