4 Mowing Tips to Keep Your Lawn Healthy

Spring is in full swing, and summer is nearly here. That means it’s time to make sure your lawn is looking its best. If you want to be the envy of the neighborhood, there are a few simple rules that you’ll want to follow. Grab your cordless lawn mower, set it to the right height, and take a new look at your lawn care routine.

Adjust Your Mower’s Height

First, you’ll want to ensure that your mower is set to the correct height. Too low, and you could shock the grass. This is sometimes called scalping and causes the grass to use its energy regrowing instead of deepening its roots. It can also make it easier for weeds to grow. You only want to cut the top third of the grass at any given time to combat these negative effects. This may mean you will have to mow more frequently, but if you are using an electric mower, that won’t be a problem. Cordless lawn mowers don’t need gasoline, so you can be ready whenever without the need to run to the gas station. All you need is a charged battery. Keep in mind, there can be exceptions based on types of grass, like bermudagrass, that like lower settings.

Wait Until It’s Dry

One of the best times of day to mow is the early evening. Your lawn is usually dry, and the sun is no longer beating down on you. Plus, mowing during the day’s peak heat and direct sun exposure can stress the lawn. Mowing in the morning could mean contending with moisture from dew, fog, or sprinklers. Wet grass cuts unevenly, and wet clippings can clog your mower, creating clumps of grass on the lawn that can smother the grass beneath them. Mowing when it’s dry in the early evening gives your lawn plenty of time to recover until the next afternoon.

Mow From Different Directions

Every time you mow your lawn, mix it up and mow from a different direction—side to side one week, up and down the next, maybe even diagonal. If you always mow in the same direction, the grass can start to lean in that direction and cause ruts in the lawn. Varying your patterns helps the grass stand tall and healthy.

Practice Grasscycling

Instead of bagging up grass clippings, practice grasscycling. Leave the clippings on the lawn. Since you are only cutting the top third of the blades, the clippings can break down quickly, returning nutrients back into the soil. Just make sure the clippings aren’t too long, as piles of clippings won’t break down as easily and can also smother grass, causing brown spots. If you notice piles on your lawn, simply take a couple extra minutes to spread them out with a rake.
