Do You Crave Sweet or Salty?

Are you a sweet or savory kind of person? I feel like people get asked that a lot. Personally, I'm not the type to always crave desserts. And maybe I'm thankful for that because in the few times I've baked, the amount of butter I've seen that goes into making a good dessert is pretty daunting. However, I'm also the type that can't resist buying a bag of chips when I'm shopping for groceries. But what does this all mean? Does this mean anything, or is it just something we're born with and have a habit of eating?

Turns out, it can mean something. Not all the time, but yes. Sometimes your body craves the things that it needs. If your body is craving salt, it may mean that you actually do need salt in your body. Those that crave foods that are higher in sodium tend to be more stressed, but it may also be due to other things. Perhaps you drink a lot of coffee and you've lost a lot of your body's salt through going to the bathroom too often. So, if you're in the mood for something salty, it might actually be your body telling you that it needs a little salt. However, don't use this as an excuse to overindulge yourself and only eat chips for every single meal. Think about your habits and why you may be craving salty foods. Who knows? It might just be you craving a burger.

Craving sugar, unfortunately, does not necessarily mean that your body needs sugar. Your body does not actually need much sugar in its diet, especially not over processed sugars. Eating something sugary like a chocolate bar can release dopamine, the happy chemical in your brain, making you a satisfied customer. However, it's easy to get addicted. Having too much sugar can lead to many bad side effects such as weight gain and headaches, so try not to go too hard on the sugar. If you're craving something sweet, start with some fruit to ease the cravings.

Sadly, most foods aren't good without a little bit of sugar or salt. Nobody's telling you to cut them out of your life completely, but it is good to watch what you eat. Drink lots of water and try to see if there are healthier alternatives.

I hoped this helped a little bit on your journey of discovering what your tastebuds are telling you.
