We’re halfway through the year—how are those New Year’s goals coming
along? As bodybuilders, we’re practically obsessed with the next
challenge. Whether it’s a PR or you’re training for a competition, goals
are a part of daily life for you. But, like most, you probably wrote
out a list of goals back in January. How are they coming along? Whether
you’re on track or not, there’s still plenty of time to achieve them.
Here are four things to focus on as you move forward.
Divide and Conquer
You probably have a shortlist of goals at the top of your mind every time you put on your lifting clothes,
but there could be a few that moved to the back burner. Whether you
wrote your goals down in a notes app or have the list taped to your
bathroom mirror, take the time to evaluate the list. Look for smaller
goals you’ve already accomplished in this year’s training. You might
want to use the same tactic for the goals you’ve forgotten about,
dividing them into smaller goals you can conquer at strategic intervals.
They may even help you accomplish your larger goals.
Jot Down New Goals
A lot can happen in six months. You’re making all sorts of progress and
discovering new feats to chase. In January, you might have never even
thought you’d be the strength-obsessed person you are today, but here
you are, dominating the deadlift platform, living the no-compromise
life. If your goals have changed and you are more inspired by something
new, jot down new goals. There’s nothing wrong with changing lanes
halfway through the year.
It’s Okay to Move On
It’s important to know the difference between sticking it out when
things get tough and forcing yourself to do something that no longer
helps you strive for more. Just as you might have new goals, there are
likely goals on January’s list that you simply don’t care about at this
point. Maybe you never get excited about running, no matter how many
times you try it. Perhaps coaching others isn’t for you after all.
Whatever the case may be, life is too short to chase goals you genuinely
don’t care about. So, don’t think of it as quitting when you move on
from a goal. Instead, it can be a shift in perspective and a sign of
growth over the past six months.
Always Get After It
All that’s left to do is throw on your bodybuilder clothing
and get after it. If everything goes according to plan, a mid-year
check-in will leave you with a new sense of purpose when training.
You’ve dumped the weight of your old goals, and you’re even more focused
on the ones that mean the most to you. Show up to the gym with a plan
of attack and keep track of your progress throughout the rest of the
year. Just imagine where you’ll be six months from now because of this
mid-year checkup.
