Memorial day is a special occasion in America and is observed this year on Monday, May 27, 2019. This holiday was created to remember and honor the people who served in our military forces who had passed away in the line of duty. Memorial Day was set as a holiday in 1971 in order for families to come together to commemorate their family members and fellow families of other fallen soldiers. People observe this holiday by visiting the cemeteries or participating in special events created by their cities such as parade or gatherings at local parks.
As we may remember in our American history course in middle school and high school, the American Civil War claimed the most lives in any American war. There is an estimate of 1,264,000 deaths due to the war and includes casualties from diseases and from fighting in battles. After the civil war, families and towns had began to honor the fallen soldiers in their own way. One of the most common ways for families and loved one to remember the soldiers is to visit their grave and lay flowers, decorating their graves, and even pour them a drink and have a drink together.
