There
are plenty of dumbbells out there. When you shop around for options, make sure
you choose the right ones. This guide will make it easier for you to pick which
weights are good for you and which ones offer little in the way of help or
improvement.
Know
the Different Types
Before
you start checking out dumbbells
for sale, you need to go over the basics. What are the different
types of dumbbells? There are two: fixed dumbbells and adjustable options.
·Fixed
dumbbells. These are the most common type of dumbbells. You won’t need to
assemble anything and the length of the rod or even the weight can’t be
modified. However, there are plenty of brands that offer fixed dumbbells at
low, low prices. If you’re on a budget and you’re just testing it out for now, then
affordable fixed weights are the way to go.
·Adjustable
dumbbells. These come with discs that allow you to adjust the weight of the
dumbbells. You can also modify the length of the bar. However, if you are
training with different weights, you’ll need to stop in the middle of your
workout to adjust the weights. Fitness addicts, though, love adjustable option
dumbbells since this allows them to have multiple weight options with just one
dumbbell.
Check
the Material
The
material of the weights is also another consideration. You want to look for
durable options, after all. Consider your options and study the pros and cons
of each one.
·Solid
metal. These are the most common types of dumbbells. However, they could put a
huge dent on your floor. You’ll want to put a rubber mat in place to protect
against dings and dents.
·Rubber.
These dumbbells, made of metal, are coated in rubber. That reduces damage upon
impact. When you drop those dumbbells accidentally, the rubber protects your
floor against scratches.
·Vinyl-coated.
These are often made of cast iron with a coating of vinyl. Some love these
dumbbells because they’re available in a slew of bright, wonderful colors. If
you want dumbbells in hot pink or scorching red, then these should hit the mark
for you.
Consider
Grip
Pick
dumbbells that are easy for you to grip. If you have sweaty hands, steer clear
of dumbbells with smooth rods or handles. Look for options that offer friction.
Or, you could add that bit of detail yourself.
Think
About Space
Do
you have a lot of room for your exercise machines and weights? If you do, then
it won’t be a problem even if you buy fixed dumbbells in a variety of weights.
If you live in a condo, though, and need to save on space, consider adjustable
weights. They’re a much better option if you’re saving on space.
Pick
the Right Weight
It’s tempting to just go straight to 30 pounds or even
20 pounds when you shop for dumbbells. But it’s safer to start with the weight
that you can handle even if that’s only 5 pounds or less. Don’t be in a hurry
to handle heavier weights. You’ll get there with continued exercise.
