In a perfect world, we could spend hours and hours in the gym. We’d
all be professional athletes who are quite literally paid to work out.
Unfortunately, most of us aren’t, meaning some days our gym time is
limited. Should you have to cut your workout short? Should you just skip
the workout entirely? Absolutely not. In fact, you might even be able
to do more with less time. Here are a few tips to help make your
workouts more efficient.
Do the Boring Work Ahead of Time
Every workout usually starts with some “boring” work. This includes deciding which workout clothes for women
or men you’ll wear, drinking your pre-workout supplement and setting up
equipment. Over time, these things can add up. So, in between sets, try
to cut out wasted movement and time. Instead, do all of these small
tasks before the workout. That way, you can seamlessly move from
exercise to exercise with minimal disruption to your flow.
Start Trying Supersets
Many people incorporate supersets into their regular training as a way
to take their pump to the next level. Even if you’re not a bodybuilder
or heavy weight trainer, supersets can still save you time.
It’s best to choose exercises that work complementing muscle groups but
can still offer a bit of variety. For example, you can go from doing
pull-ups to doing barbell rows or pair squats with lunges.
Set a Timer
If you’re really short on time, the best way to stay on track and on
schedule is by using a timer. Even if you think 30 minutes isn’t enough
to get a workout in, you might be surprised at how much you get done
when up against the clock. Plus, you likely don’t need to exercise quite
as long as you think either. Just 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week is enough for many types of people, so use a timer to help you optimize your schedule.
Fire Up a Fast-Paced Playlist
Along with your timer, you need the right soundtrack to get your heart
pumping and your blood flowing. You’ll find that many popular streaming
services feature curated playlists based on beats per minute (BPM),
ensuring that each song keeps the same pace and energy. Everyone is
different, and depending on whether you’re running, cycling or rowing,
you might want to keep a specific pace. Browse through the playlist
options and give one a try.
Cut Down on Rest Breaks
Finally, one of the easiest and quickest ways to add some efficiency to
your workout routine is to reduce rest times. Even if you don’t think
you rest that long between sets, once you time yourself, you might
notice you’re spending more than a minute between sets. While some
routines call for longer rest times, if you’re wearing your gym shoes, consider it work time, not rest time.
