How To Make Your Home Totally Zen

Although Zen is not a real design style and does not come with a book of rules, it is often associated with minimalism, simplicity and purity of lines. It is rather a way of arranging your home and creating an atmosphere that takes away the stress and hassle of your daily routine.

Low Lines

The furniture you choose should have simple and pretty lines. No camelback sofas and cabriole legs in this kind of design. Modern or Asian furniture that is neutral would work best. There are plenty of pieces you can gather to help create clean lines in the living room or bedroom. Some find that a good way to declutter the home is to get rid of bold pieces.

Play With Soft And Natural Light

For a fully relaxing space, replace harsh fluorescent lights with calming, dimmed or candle lights. Place different sources of light which will allow you to control the intensity and the areas you want to be lighted. Avoid having a harsh direct light from the ceiling and take advantage of all possibilities to mix a floor lamp and indirect light.

For the bed area, having wall-mounted reading lights are very practical as they can be oriented to emphasize a particular area, unlike bedside lamps which are rarely flexible. If you like diffused lights, you may go for some nice scented candles.

Choose Natural And Light Fabrics

When it comes to fabrics you should stick to the same rule of natural, light and comfortable. One of the essential elements of your Zen décor are the curtains that provide a sensation of intimacy, while still reducing noise and blocking air draughts. Go for natural fabrics, such as linen, wool or bunting wool and match them with the rest of the room.

For a more elaborate ambience, associate them with blinds that inflect the light to make a different atmosphere. Pay special attention to the fixation systems, as it would be a waste to fix beautiful curtains on non-matching rods.

Remove Electronic Disturbances

Electronic devices are most definitely a source of distraction and therefore do not integrate with a fully Zen decor. A great thing to hang on a wall instead of a TV is glass prints. If you decide to give up the TV, look into Summer Scenes to find the perfect glass print that fits your Zen decor.

However, if you need to have your TV set in the bedroom, try to place it in a discrete area or hide it in a specially designed cupboard. Also, make sure you hide all wires and cables that could mangle the serene atmosphere of the entire setting.

Declutter

Zen spaces have no room for clutter and ornamentation. Its goal is to let go of attachments. So the first task you should do if you're going Zen is to clean and organize. Get rid of what you don't need.

Bring In Calmness With Green Plants

Plants have a calming effect because of their soothing green colours and by providing oxygen. However, avoid flowers which need special maintenance or may emanate scents. Bonsai trees or hanging terrariums make a really good choice and are often included in Zen décor.

Add Water

The sound of water is beautifully calming, so adding a water feature to any room makes it more tranquil. You can add a large feature in the middle of the room or a small fountain on the tabletop.

Zen design is both minimalistic and elegant. Everything in the room is meant to calm your spirit and the eye. It's the perfect retreat for a go-getting or a late-working entrepreneur.
