Hooker Valley Track, in Aoraki/ Mt. Cook National Park, offers some spectacular views over the Southern Alps and the Hooker Glacier. The hike itself is fairly easy and a lot of fun to walk, with swing bridges along the way, playful icebergs floating on proglacial lakes and the great chief himself, Aoraki.
His iconic peak is the highest in New Zealand, and could not be mistaken even from hundreds of miles away,
The tramp starts on the car park, with the first stop being the Alpine Memorial, dedicated to alpinists and guides lost while trying to conquer the great mountain. It is here that Edmund Hillary perfected his mountaineering skills to summit Mt. Everest the highest mountain in the world. The walk gets near Mueller Lake and Mt. Sefton and then crosses three swing bridges above the Hooker River. The last part of the tramp is Hooker Lake and the impressive Hooker Glacier.
