You’re probably disciplined with your workout routine, hitting the
treadmill, stair stepper or iron almost daily. But even the most
consistent athletes hit a wall eventually and find they aren’t pushing
themselves quite as much when the excitement of a new exercise regimen
has worn off. If you feel like you need a new fire or a new challenge,
try these four ideas to take your workouts up a notch.
Find a Way to Gamify It
Sometimes the mundane process of picking up and putting down weights or
running on the treadmill can get a little tiresome. Finding a way to
make your workout a game or incorporating competition can help you
strive toward that little bit of extra effort. There are countless ways
to gamify your training and plenty of apps available to help. One idea
is to set a specific challenge for each individual workout and have a
friend play along. Lace up your gym shoes and get ready for some competitive fun.
Don’t Drop Your Dumbbells
Remember playing the “floor is lava” game as a kid? Well, this
challenge takes that same idea and applies it to free weights. It’s
pretty simple: don’t put down your weights until you’re 100% done with
the exercise. Whether you’re doing curls, lunges, racked front squats or
any other weight training, don’t drop those weights until you’re
finished with the exercise and ready to move on to something new. It
might not seem too difficult, but those dumbbells will feel mighty heavy
by the end of the workout.
Implement EMOM Training Into Your Routine
Every minute on the minute (EMOM) training was once only popular in the
functional training scene, but it’s relatively mainstream now. If you
find that your rests are too long between sets or that your workouts
aren’t as efficient as you would like, EMOM can help. Here’s how it
works. Set a timer to go off every minute. When the minute starts,
perform a certain number of reps and use the remainder of the minute for
rest. When the timer dings at the start of each minute, repeat the
process. You might start to feel the burn around the fifth or sixth
round, so make sure to wear your sweat-wicking workout clothes for women or men.
Record Yourself During the Workout
This challenge might be best suited for working out solo at home, but
having the camera rolling will keep you honest throughout your workout.
Though it’s hard to admit, there are plenty of moments you might rest a
little too long or skip the last rep of a set because you’re too tired.
If you want to hold yourself more accountable with the added benefit of
being able to check your form post-workout, try videotaping your entire
session.
