Arena of Valor offers a few characters of varying play-styles for free

Tencent probably expected more from Arena of Valor when it launched the game in North America last December. After all, it was the highest grossing mobile title last year, pulling in $1.9 billion in revenue. It’s gargantuan in China, but on this side of the Pacific, it barely registers. Even with the mythos-shattering introduction of DC heroes like Batman and Superman, it’s mostly floundered. People are playing it -- I’ve never had an issue connecting to a game -- just most of the people on this continent aren’t spending any money on it. So what do you do in 2018 when you want to make money on a video game?

What stands out about Arena of Valor is how it simplifies the control scheme and mechanics without totally diluting the game’s depth. The virtual joystick it employs may not be as precise as the tap-to-move scheme of other touchscreen MOBAs, but it feels more natural and, once again, it’s easier for the average gamer to pick up and understand. And the way that you can aim your skills by pressing and holding on the button it’s attached to is brilliant.

Perhaps the most disappointing thing about Arena Of Valor is simply that if you’re coming for the DC characters... they just aren’t there. You have to spend considerable time unlocking extra characters so to get to familiar faces you’ll have to put the hours in. Similarly, as with all mobile games the in-app purchases can make it feel as though paying extra is the only way to advance, even though that’s not strictly true. Certainly, it’s tempting to shortcut the grind of getting better equipment by paying and you’ll have to decide whether it’s worth it.

The idea of an isometric MOBA being adapted to consoles seemed like it would never come to fruition. Arena of Valor challenges this notion by taking the concept from mobile and adapting it with an intuitive control scheme and smoothing out its graphical fidelity. Considering that the Switch has four shoulder buttons, it does make us wonder if a MOBA with heroes designed to have four abilities such as League of Legends could also be ported to home consoles. In the meantime, Arena of Valor will definitely scratch the itch for some fast-paced 5v5 action on Switch.
