Htrea Ep. 2

Every night Dante lay in bed awake thinking about this. Thoughts of life and philosophy crossed his minds before he even knew what those words meant. It was when kindergarten started did life become much clearer to him...

On the first day of kindergarten, Dante was late. He spent that last night thinking way too much and ended up sleeping at around 3am. He was nervous and scared at the same time. He wasn't bothered by the fact of meeting new children and leaving his parents to begin his journey at school, but he had just realized something horrible while laying in bed awake. He had realized that he forgot to brush his teeth. He was scared that if he got up now his parents would notice and wouldn't allow him to go to school tomorrow because of the lack of sleep. If he didn't brush his teeth he thought that he would die from the cavities from all the cookies he ate that day. Caught in between dilemma, Dante thought it would be safer if he just slept and brushed in the morning because his baby teeth would eventually all out. Satisfied with his deductive reasoning, he fell sound asleep soon after.

As soon as the alarm hit 7:30 a.m., Dante bolted upright and immediately ran down to brush his teeth. After examining his teeth and he frantically squeezed a good 6 inches of tooth paste and scrubbed frantically before his parents called him downstairs for breakfast. After eating his favorite chocolate flavored cereal with a bowl of milk, he turned and kissed his mother goodbye and waved at his father. However, before he could leave his mom yelled, "Don't forget your ID card honey!" Now you may be wondering ID card? Dante was only in kindergarten yet he was required to have an ID? The answer is yes. In the world of Htrea, as stated before, money was taught at a very young age. And having an ID identified each student and the amount of funds each had. Instead of having parents put money into their ID card account, each new kindergarten student would be given $500 to begin their journey. No funds could be added by another person until the child was 18 years old. Funds would be increased and decreased due to the person's working habits and spending habits respectively.

Dante remembered all of this instantly as soon as his mother mentioned his ID card. No longer will life be so carefree as it had been in the past 4 years of his life. He realized that his life was in fact, his from this day forward. His parents will still act his caretaker and guardians, but most of his decisions will be made independently and his parents will act more as a mentor. For example, the first decision Dante had to make was to either take the bus or walk. Taking the bus will require him to spend $1 form his account, but it will take him to school in 10 minutes. Walking on the other hand would be free (of course), but it would take him 20 minutes to get to school. Taking a glance at his watch, he saw that he had 25 minutes before school would start. And with a mad grin on his face he muttered under his breath, "I still got time."

He overestimated himself. He was still a five-year old boy. Although he spent most of his life pretty active, playing sports and taking walks, he did not realized how tiring running for a lengthy distance would be. "Guess that article lied to me I guess," he said as he was panting for his breathe, "they said you would be okay as long as you paced yourself. Guess I'll just have to walk the rest of the way and be late." The clock hit 8:10 before he finally managed to dash through the school gates. Before proceeding, he was greeted by a lady who stopped him in his tracks. With a frown on her face she yelled, "Why are you late on your first day of school young man?"

Dante replied with a cool, calm and collected tone, "Why are you yelling at a five-year-old boy? Can't we all make mistakes once or twice?" The lady was baffled at this response and immediately demanded Dante's ID card and scanned it.

She then turned to Dante with a grin and said, "Well then Mr. Dante, I think from now on I will keep a very close eye on you. No way you're getting past me with that attitude. Now hurry along before your teacher starts yelling out at you."

Before Dante could question why she was grinning back there, he noticed that the funds on his ID card now said $475. "She took $25 away from me when I was late 10 minutes?!" He couldn't let this bother him too much or he would just end up becoming more flustered to class. So, after putting on his big boy pants, he managed to find his classroom door. When he opened the door he was astounded...
