In 1983, the Cabbage Patch Doll was the toy of the season! For those of you who don't know, the Cabbage Patch doll is a baby that was "born" in a cabbage patch and that you "adopt" when you buy them. They even include a certificate of adoption so it feels authentic. In 1983, the US went insane for these dolls! People would actually travel to different states to try to get one of these dolls. Some people even paid more than double the price of the doll so that they wouldn't have to try travel anymore. There were even fights and riots for these dolls.
My father worked at a department store in New York City at the time, and my uncle was desperate for one of these dolls. My dad told him that he was expecting a shipment of the dolls the day before Thanksgiving and to be at the store at a certain time. My uncle got there at the exact time and there was already a huge crowd around the delivery truck, so he tried to make his way to the front. He got there and was able to get the last doll, but then, an older woman sucker-punched my uncle in the face. He asked her "what did you do that for?" to which she replied: "I was hoping you would drop the doll!"
Another time, my father had to take a small shipment of dolls over to another location in a van. He got there and there was a crowd in receiving. The receivers would not open the shipping door, yelling "we're not open!" My father replied: "Fine. I'll just sell these Cabbage Patch Dolls to these lovely people here!" Suddenly, the doors flew open and they received the shipment while my dad went on his merry way.
Nothing has met or surpassed the craze of the Cabbage Patch Doll... thankfully.
