The Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) issued what may be the last update on the Salmonella Newport Outbreak
linked to red onions that was announced in June 2020. The outbreak became one
of the largest salmonella outbreaks in almost a decade after having over 1,100
reported cases in the U.S. alone and over 500 cases in Canada.
In their recent report the FDA
stated “Eleven of the environmental subsamples tested positive for various
types of Salmonella Newport; however, none matched the outbreak strain.
Many who fell ill at the time of the
outbreak may have already recovered but others may still be experiencing
illnesses caused by the salmonella infection, although thankfully there were no
deaths linked to the outbreak over 160 over people did require hospitalization.
