My love did not ride in on a white horse
to sweep me off my feet like a damsel in distress.
My love brought me a horse,
put a sword in my hand and said,
“We can defeat these dragons together.”
Even when I feel afraid, even when the dragons
in my head become too fearsome,
my love taught me how to wield a sword,
how to ride a horse faster than a shooting star.
He made me feel strong and invincible.
I never needed a white knight –
I needed someone who could ride into battle with me.
But when it came time
to fight the fire-breathing dragon,
I found that I rode
alone. But this time, I was not afraid.
I realized that my love
hadn't left me to be cruel,
but to make me realize
that I am powerful on my own.
I battle dragons every
day now,
but the fire and fangs
no longer scare me.
I am able to fight for
my life
and win.
Thank you for helping
me see that
I am my own hero.
