Dr. Trehan on 5 Things to Know About COVID-19 Vaccines

If the world manages to conquer Covid-19, it would be significantly because of India''. This statement by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reflects the confidence that the world holds in India’s COVID-19 vaccines – COVAXIN and Covishield. As of late February 2020, these vaccines have been administered to over 11,400,000 people in India and gifted to 20 other nations of the world under India's vaccine diplomacy policy. India’s vaccines have brought great hope and pride to the nation but the short time taken to develop and launch the vaccines have led to a number of misgivings among various groups. Let us take a look at what India’s leading doctor and the Chairman of Medanta Hospital, Dr Naresh Trehan has to say about these vaccines.

  • Minor side effects are manageable - Dr. Naresh Trehan of Medanta says that some of those who are vaccinated may experience minor side effects such as headache, fever, or a mild pain at the site of the injection. Most of these side effects last for hours; a few may last for a few days. These can be managed with paracetamol. If you have been vaccinated and are experiencing high fever or a great deal of pain, it is important to contact your doctor.

  • Immediate monitoring for allergic reactions is important - Like with many other vaccines, it is possible that any person inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine may develop a strong allergic reaction, says Dr Trehan. This could cause an outbreak of hives/rashes, anaphylaxis, breathlessness, or loss of consciousness. Every person who has been vaccinated must be monitored for an hour or so to prevent serious allergic reactions and if these occur regular treatment protocols for allergic reactions must be followed. No vaccine related deaths have been reported in India.

  • It is imperative that the schedule be maintained – The COVID-19 vaccines available in India require a second dose. If you have been administered the first dose, it is important to check with the administrator of the vaccination center or the doctor administering it about the date when the second dose will be due. Mark the date in your calendar and do not miss out. Even if you have experienced mild discomfort following the initial dose, it is advisable to stick to the schedule.

  • Stay positive – The two vaccines launched in India have a lot of scientific study and research backing them. It is important to trust the data available and to stay positive. Despite the vaccines, it is important to stay safe, wear masks, and maintain social distancing. With a large number of vaccines being administered in India and abroad, the number of people experiencing side effects is very low. We are learning to be more effective each day, says Dr Trehan.

  • Do not believe rumours – There are a number of wild rumours about the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines. Do not trust everything you read and consult your doctor, says Dr Trehan. The vaccines have demonstrated a boost in the immune system and have been quite effective. People with comorbid conditions have been safely administered their first doses without adverse reactions.
