3 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Workout When You’re Short on Time

How long does it take you to get a solid workout in? An hour? An hour and a half? The answer can vary from lifter to lifter, but making serious gains requires serious time in the gym. Unfortunately for most of us, unlimited time isn’t always available. Between work, school, family, and other things, sometimes 30 minutes is all we can spare. But just because you’re short on time doesn’t mean you can’t get a killer workout. Here are three tips to get the most out of shorter workouts.

Go in With a Plan

As you probably already know, the only way to produce consistent results in the gym is to follow a set program. Walking into the gym and saying, “Let’s just see what happens” only leads to wasted time and mediocre results. When you’re short on time, you should walk into the gym with a plan. For example, if you typically allow 90 minutes for your workout but only have 70 minutes on a given day, prioritize the movements directly related to the goal of the workout and strategically skip others. For example, if it’s chest day, bench press and dumbbell flies should definitely be your focus, but accessory movements might not need much attention. By the time you throw on your bodybuilding clothes, you should know exactly what you’ll be doing in order to maximize your time.

Supersets Are the Name of the Game

Want to get more done in less time? Supersets are the name of the game. Supersets help you hit two opposing or complementary muscle groups back-to-back to make your workout more efficient. Really, you can turn any two exercises into a superset if you’re creative and have the equipment for each close by. For example, if you’re doing trap bar deadlifts, you can transition into shrugs at the top of the last rep. You could also make a superset out of EZ bar curls and a standing French press with a quick weight drop. Turn your resting time into working time, and you’re sure to get an intense pump, all while being more efficient.

Know the Deadline

You know you’re short on time, but how much time do you really have? Is it just 30 minutes, or can you fit in an extra 10? Along with establishing a plan before you get to the gym, you should know exactly when you need to set down the weights and head out. Setting a hard deadline for yourself will help you stay focused and avoid wasting time with long rest periods or general distractions. Knowing your deadline when you walk in wearing your bodybuilding clothing will help you bring a no-compromise attitude to even the quickest workouts.
