6 Lawn Mowing Tricks

Do you want to keep your lawn in pristine shape? There are plenty of tricks you can use to make it possible. These tricks include:

Keep the blades sharp

Using blunt mower blades is synonymous with using a dull knife to cut vegetables. You can't achieve much with it, can you? For you to have an easy time cutting the grass on your lawn, ensure the lawnmower blades are sharp all the time.

You can sharpen the blades by yourself or hire an expert to help you out. You should note that you will be wasting your time sharpening old blades. If you inspect the blades and find them too old, simply replace them.

Sharpening the blades not only makes your work easy, it also keeps the grass healthy. This is because the lawnmower gives the grass a clean cut that causes no damage.

Trim to the right height

The height you cut the grass determines how fast you complete the work, and how healthy the lawn is. Avoid cutting the grass too low as you might damage the crown. Mowing too low also encourages weed growth.

At the same time, you should avoid cutting the grass too high, as the grass will grow too fast, forcing you to keep on mowing every few days.

There is no specific height that you should cut the grass—it all depends on the type of grass you have on your lawn. You should research and find the right height of your grass.  When cutting the grass, focus on a height that will strengthen the roots so that the grass can get stronger and thrive.

Alternate the mowing route

If you visit many yards, you will notice many homeowners mow their lawns in the same direction. Over time, the lawns develop unsightly stripes that often grow back irregularly.

For you to prevent these patterns, always alternate your mowing directions. Mow in one direction one time and then perpendicularly the next time.

Protect yourself

While mowing looks fun, it comes with its fair share of risks. You can trip and fall, you can hurt your hands, or even lose your hearing. The cool thing is there are a number of things you can do to protect yourself.

One of the things you can do is to wear work boots when working. To protect your hands, wear working gloves. When it comes to ear protection when mowing, wear headphones for mowing or earplugs.

Use the right lawnmower.

There are plenty of lawn mowers you can use to cut grass on your lawn. There are manual reel mowers, push mowers, self-propelled mowers, zero-turn tractors, ride-on mowers, and many others. Choose a lawn mower depending on the size of your lawn.

Avoid mowing wet grass.

When you come across wet grass or if it has been raining the previous night, avoid mowing the lawn. This is because it's challenging to get a good cut when the grass blades are wet. This not only makes your work difficult, but it also ends up destroying the grass.

Mowing when wet is even dangerous to you as you can slip and fall. In some cases, you get electrocuted, especially when using an electric lawnmower.
