Leg exercises work some of the biggest muscles in your body. They can
get your heart rate up and help you improve overall body strength. If
you want to fit in a good workout at one of your local health clubs or gyms in Stockton
without using equipment, there are simple but effective leg exercises
to get you feeling the burn. They may do just as much, if not more, for
your body without added weight or equipment—working to bend, extend,
stretch, and strengthen some major muscle groups.
Quad and Hammie Burn: Squats
You probably saw this one coming a mile away. There’s nothing like a
good, old-fashioned set of squats to work those upper leg and glute
muscles. You can complete a set of squats as quickly or as slowly as you
want as long as you don’t sacrifice your form.
For squats,
stand with your feet just a bit wider than hip-width apart. Lower your
hips and butt from the standing position, keeping your chest up and your
knees in line with your ankles. Press your heels into the floor and
extend your legs back into a standing position without locking your
knees. Repeat.
Graceful Inner-Thigh Killer: Plie Pulse
Ballerinas may look graceful with their long limbs, but their workouts
are pretty brutal—and it’s all bodyweight, baby. If you’ve tried a barre
class, you know that almost any amount of time in a plie position means
your legs are going to be really sore.
Get into a plie position
by standing with your legs wider than your hips and your toes pointing
outwards. Sink low like you’re going into a squat and hold the position.
Proceed to pulse with your legs, pressing your knees outward and
squeezing your glutes.
Core and Leg Strength: Warrior Poses
Warrior poses are a beloved, strength-building pose for yoga
practitioners. By holding this posture, you can work your legs and your
core, both of which can help improve your balance. For best results, you
can complete one set of warrior poses for your left leg, then another
one for the right.
Warrior balances are a popular leg exercise.
Put all your weight in one foot, and have your other leg suspended with
your knee near your waist. Maintaining your balance, move into a Warrior
III position with both arms extended in front of you and the floating
leg extended behind you. Your body should look like a “T.” Return to the
first position and repeat. You’ll switch to the other leg when you’ve
completed a set.
Leg exercises are essential to improving and
enriching your exercise experience—and these moves are excellent for men
and women of all ages. You can always head to your favorite gyms in Salinas
or in your community to practice these leg exercises. Some gyms and
health clubs may have dedicated spaces or specialized areas for
beginners, where you might feel more comfortable practicing bodyweight
exercises in an everyday workout routine.
