We give thanks for food we are about to receive.
An early morning check to see if we got the bull. Trap #1 no, Trap #2 no, as I came up on #3 there he was, not in the trap but sunning himself in a clearing. I backed out slowly after making eye contact with him. Phone call made, one hour later, one head shot as he got up to walk away. The night before he made the rounds through two farms breaking stuff just for the fun of it. Estimated to be about 800 pounds, he was a wild bull, a direct descendent of the first 9 that were given to Kahmehameha The Great more than 200 years ago by Capt. George Vancouver.
Vancouver was first introduced to Hawaii as a young 15 year old serving as a cabin boy on Capt. James Cook’s ship the Resolution. He was at Kealakekua Bay when Cook was killed, just down the hill from our farm.
We took most of the meat and split it between 3 families. The next day we trapped another larger Bull. Almost 2000 pounds between the two. The remainder of the cows will be taken by other wild animals on the mountain. This was as real as it gets, from forest to farm to table. Joy & I are very thankful for this life we live and what the land provides. Tomorrow we head into town, need a good bottle of Red to go with BULL. Aloha
