Remembering Books

Remembering Books

I love to read books and it was not always like that. I got hooked after public school. It was the story of “Dove” Robin Lee Graham’s journey of being the youngest person to sail around the world in a small sailboat that hooked me.

Of all the projects and adventures I have taken on, it was always rooted in research from books. The internet was just not around. Now I love this ability to have all knowledge instantly available, but getting what you need from books was like a treasure hunt. As far back as I can remember, teachers, parents, and friends would say “look it up” That meant you needed a library of books.

What wonderful memories I have reading to kids, sometimes the same book over and over and over. Sleep.

I do not read on line books. I read and search out news and information online, we use our website to sell Coffee, and just about every other daily use. But I want to hold the written word in my hand, page by page, the soul of the writer coming through, and no light flashing telling me to plug in a charger.

Through out the history of books, people have used them as a display of status, knowledge, and furnishing. There are coffee table books, book shelves, book cases, and bookmarks. When I see someone’s library, you ask, “Did you read all of these”. Most times the answer is “Someday I will”.

Walk into a coffee shop and it is all about Wi-fi.

Can you spend hours browsing in a computer store, I love book stores.

Look at one of my book shelves, color, titles, shapes and sizes.

Now fill that space with a few kindles, lap tops, or tablets, it is just not the same.

Put down your machine; pour some coffee, glass of wine. Find that special place in your home; and curl up with a good book.
