What is Sorare?
Sorare is an NFT-shaped fantasy football game that combines traditional fantasy sports and trading card games with the emerging world of crypto and NFTs. The game sees players assemble a team of five players that score points depending on real-world performance.
Players are owned in the form of digital cards, similar to the way traditional sports trading card games operate. The main difference with Sorare’s digital cards is that they double as digital assets known as NFTs.
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, exist on the blockchain and the fact they are non-fungible means each card is completely unique; this is similar to physical trading cards. Although multiple versions of cards—whether physical or digital—can exist, their value is determined by condition, serial number and other factors.
What is FPL?
Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is the most popular fantasy football game in the world with over 11 million players. Players select a full squad of 15 players, made up of 11 starting players and 4 substitutes, which can be rotated each round of fixtures.
Unlike Sorare, players don’t double as digital assets and subsequently, there is no limit to the number of FPL gamers that can own a particular player. Players also have a set price in FPL which differentiates it from Sorare.
Is Sorare free to play?
As FPL takes the same form as other traditional fantasy sports, it’s common knowledge that the game is entirely free to play. While friends may set up private leagues and set their own entry fee, there is no option to do so within the game itself.
Sorare on the other hand has in-game transactions, and some would argue it resembles the stock market more than it does traditional fantasy games. While players can use free cards (referred to as common cards) to play Sorare without putting their own money into the game, these cards can’t be sold and players are extremely limited in terms of the rewards they can win.
To win the top rewards, Sorare players must use cards which they have purchased. Paid cards come in four forms of rarity: limited, rare, super rare or unique. A card’s value is ultimately determined by its rarity and also the real-life performance/value of the player in question.
The most expensive Sorare football card ever sold was an Erling Haaland unique card which sold for a staggering 265ETH in January 2022, at the time of purchase this would’ve valued the card at over $685,000.
Can I make money through Sorare?
The main difference between Sorare and FPL is that players can make money from their Sorare endeavours. On the other hand, while ranking as one of the top 20 managers in FPL will earn you prizes, players aren’t competing for cash rewards.
There are multiple ways to make money through Sorare:
Players can use real-life scouting knowledge to invest in players that they believe will go on to become future stars. As a player’s value increases in the real world, their Sorare card value will follow suit.
Players can also earn ETH (a type of cryptocurrency) or cash for hitting certain point thresholds.
Finally, players can earn cards as rewards which can be sold to other players for cash.
Is Sorare better than FPL?
It all depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re in search of a quick, easy-to-play game where you can compete against friends, FPL is probably the better option. If you have limited knowledge of English football, FPL also makes more sense.
On the other hand, if you’re looking to earn some extra money to pick up that pair of cargo pants you’ve had your eye on, or if you’re interested in collecting cards as well as fantasy games, Sorare will likely be the more suitable option.
