Benefits of prefilled communion

A church service, especially in a catholic setup, is not complete without partaking in the Holy Communion. Believers partake in the Holy communion to commemorate the Lord's supper or the Last supper. The fellowship brings Christians together. It entails eating the Body of Christ and His blood. Most churches use pure grape wine to represent the 'blood' and bread wafers to represent the body to mark the ceremony. Today, churches are advancing to prefilled communion instead of the traditional method of partaking in the Lord's supper where believers used to drink from the same cup, as was the case in the actual Last dinner with Jesus Christ. So, what are the benefits of using prefilled communion?

The following are the benefits of using prefilled communion cups;

1.       It is more Hygienic

Prefilled Communion cups are sealed; hence no one interferes with the seal, and one removes the seal themselves. This helps to maintain cleanliness as a lot of hands do not handle the cup. Today, the world is faced with the deadly pandemic, the COVID-19, transmitted from one person to another through touch. To prevent the spread of the disease, people have to maintain a high degree of personal hygiene and sanitize regularly.  They also have to keep social distance to avoid contact among themselves. Therefore, prefilled communion cups ensure that Christians do not have to share the communion cups while partaking in the Holy Eucharist, leading to the transmission of the virus. Prefilled Communion cups, therefore, offer a healthier and more hygienic way of sharing the Holy Eucharist.

2.       Helps to Save on Time

Some churches have a large congregation, or even there may be an event in the church that leads to people's unusual turn-up. It may be time-consuming to prepare the communion, not to mention the inconvience in distributing the communion to all the members.  Therefore, the prefilled communion cups provide a fast alternative to serving the Eucharist to the church members. Prefilled cups also help save time as most communion cups are disposable; hence one does not have to clean them after the church service.

3.       Helps to Prevent Wastage

Prefilled communion cups help prevent spillage while refilling the cups, especially when there is a large congregation. The prefilled cups have a seal hence no spillage. Additionally, some churches place the Holy Communion on seats before the service in readiness to partake in the Eucharist. However, members may not turn up as expected; therefore, the remaining communion goes to waste if not sealed. Therefore, churches should embrace the use of prefilled cups to prevent wastage as the Holy Eucharist is expensive.

4.       No Refrigeration

Most prefilled communion cups are packed with fresh unleavened bread wafers. The grape wine contains no artificial additives; thus, it is fresh and requires no refrigeration while storing the holy communion. The prefilled communion cups also have a more extended expiry period from the day of their manufacture.

Everyone should maintain good personal hygiene, whether at home or in the church, especially during the current covid-19 pandemic. The church can contribute to fighting the disease by incorporating prefilled communion cups while partaking in the Holy Eucharist ceremony, among other benefits of using prefilled communion cups.
