On March 10, 2018, Alfa Chemistry, a leading chemical company located in New York, announced to launch a wide range of biomaterials products to meet the increasing demands from their customers.
The history of biomaterials study can be dated back to 50 years ago. The study of biomaterials is called biomaterials science or biomaterials engineering. Biomaterials science including elements of medicine, biology, chemistry, tissue engineering and materials science. Biomaterials refer to high-tech materials that used to diagnose, repair, or enhance their function in human tissues and organs. In other words, biomaterials are natural or man-made materials which used to replace and repair living tissues and their effects are irreplaceable. However, biomaterials can perform, enhance, or replace a function that is lost due to illness or injury but can not restore the defective part of the body.
As for the classification of biological material, it can be divided in to the following three category: metal materials such as alkali metals and their alloys; inorganic materials such as bioactive ceramics, hydroxyapatite; and organic materials such as polymer aggregate materials.
And as for the polymer material, according to the material properties, it can be divided into synthetic materials (polyurethane, polyester, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, lactic acid glycolic acid copolymer, other medical synthetic plastics and rubber) and natural macromolecules (such as collagen, silk protein, cellulose, chitosan, etc.). According to the different usage, polymer materials can be divided into bioinertmaterial, bioactive material and biodegradable material.
Biological materials are mainly used for therapeutic applications of human. In regular, biological materials must meet the below four requirements:
• Biological functionality: It refers to a series of properties that a biological material should possess or complete with a corresponding biological function. For example, as a slow release drug, drug-release performance is the biological functionality.
• Biocompatibility: Biocompatibility can be summarized as the relationship between material and living body, including blood compatibility and histocompatibility (non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, pyrogen-free reaction, no immune rejection, etc.).
• Chemical stability: Resistant to biological aging or biodegradable.
• Machinability: Machinability means that the material can be molded and disinfected by UV sterilization, high pressure boiling, ethylene oxide gas or alcohol disinfection.
“In order to meet the increasing demands from our customers all over the world, we decide to launch a wide range of different biomaterials. “ Said Dr. Brenda Randy, the marketing Manager of Alfa Chemistry. “Since March 10, 2018, good-quality biocompatible metals, ceramics as well as a range of biodegradable polymers are provided by Alfa Chemistry.”
