I recently returned to practicing yoga--yes, I'm still in traction. When I practice
frequently I take a lot of pain pills, but also I get philosophical and feel the need to share. Just think of me as your
Wiki Zen Master--or your Wacky Zen Master, whichever works for you.
After practice last night, two ideas fought through the pain that I thought were
worth sharing. Brace yourselves.
In yoga, there's always an opportunity to go
deeper in your practice. Meaning, there's not an ideal or end state. After the crying stops, that is. The more
you practice, the deeper you can advance your poses. The same is true in life. There's always
an opportunity to get better, be better, to advance your skills and put them to
good and positive use. The goal should be to always focus on that growth and
practice.
One of my favorite and most impactful lessons
from the mat is the idea of simultaneously having a focused intent while letting go. To advance your practice in yoga, you create an intent and focus for
your practice. In counterbalance, you should let go and not control the
outcome. In life, you should always focus on creating clear intent,
visualizing the outcomes you want but know that whatever happens is out of your control.
What is meant to happen will happen exactly how it is supposed to. Letting go can help alleviate stress and tension. It does not absolve
responsibility and accountability but you can better manage expectations.
So be more like Elsa from the movie Frozen and
let that shit go!
