Thinking of what to give your loved ones this holiday? While it may be difficult to think of the perfect gift, you don’t want to give certain items. This blog post will go over some gifts to avoid giving this holiday season.
Exercise Equipment
Even if your friend or family member is a regular gym goer, giving them exercise equipment can be touchy. Giving weights, exercise clothes, and other gear can unintentionally insinuate that the recipient needs to lose weight or gain more muscle. Sometimes, people who do think you need to lose weight use these gifts as a mask to hide their message. In order to avoid accidentally hurting anyone’s feelings, don’t buy them any type of exercise gear.
Pets or Pet Items

Never buy anyone a pet that they didn’t ask for or that they might not be able to take care of. A pet is more of a burden than a gift, since you need to continually care for it. Unlike other unwanted gifts, pets are not items and cannot be disposed of. While pets are a cute idea, they can lead to a lot of stress and expenses for the recipient.
It’s also not a good idea to give a pet gift. Even if the recipient adores their pet, they won’t be happy if all you give them is a chew toy. If you do decide to give a pet-related present, address it to the pet and make sure to still give a gift to the owner.
DVDs and CDs
These items used to make great gifts; however, with TV and steaming services, DVDs and CDs are becoming a thing of the past. Keep up with the times by avoiding these gifts this holiday season.
Lingerie
Obviously, the recipient of this gift matters the most. This is something you give to your significant other, not your family members. If you do give this gift, make sure you give it in private. You wouldn’t want your significant other to open this gift right in front of their parents on Christmas morning.
Mugs
Most people have a shelf full of cups and mugs, so this present is not likely going to be a hit. Instead, focus on something related to their favorite beverages, whether that is coffee, wine, or alcohol.

Knick-Knacks or Gag Gifts
Most people’s homes are already cluttered with items they hardly use. Adding to that clutter isn’t always appreciated. Even if you think a figurine looks cute, or a gag gift would get a good laugh, these things typically stay in the box for a few months or years before being thrown out. Instead of buying a useless item, the recipient would much rather you spend time with them and buy them a drink as you hang out.
Cash
This gift is good for kids and teens, not adults. Cash tends to be a tacky gift because it is very hasty and impersonal. Give too much, and it can send the wrong message; give too little, and it can make you look cheap. Instead of cash, think of buying an experience where you and the recipient can share a priceless memory.
Holiday Items

While you may want to stick to Christmas-themed gifts, these items are only relevant and usable during the holiday season. Otherwise, these gifts go unused 10 months out of the year. Ugly Christmas sweaters may be fun, but they are bulky, ugly, and can’t be worn any of the other months. Consider buying them tickets to the local Christmas light show instead.
Clothes or Handbags
People have their own personal preferences when it comes to clothing style. It can be incredibly difficult to choose an item of clothing that the recipient will like. Even if the recipient likes the clothing you picked, how do you know it will fit them? Most of the time, the clothing or handbag you bought will sit in the back of their closet, or will be returned at the store the next day. Most people are particular about their clothing and handbags, so avoid buying these items altogether. If you know the person loves a specific store, buy them a gift card instead.
